Honeymoon perks

One of the best things about being on honeymoon is that people will go out of their way to make your trip special. The key to getting honeymoon perks? Telling everyone that it’s your honeymoon – whether you’re booking through a travel agent or doing everything independently, dropping a little “it’s for our honeymoon” into the conversation/email/booking form usually does the trick.

On our honeymoon, we received some kind of treat for being honeymooners from everywhere we stayed apart from our two self-catering accommodations. The perks themselves ranged from a room upgrade to rose petals and chocolates on the bed and chilled champagne on arrival. Our favourite was undoubtedly when we were staying at Kosi Forest Lodge; returning to our “tent” after sundowners overlooking the lake, we found the bath in our outdoor bathroom had been run for us – surrounded by candles, and with a rather decadent bottle of liqueur waiting for us, alongside some lovely Swiss chocolates.

Travel agents usually have access to special offers with hotels and resorts, so there are definitely perks to booking through a company, but it’s worth knowing that you don’t have to miss out on the honeymoon treats if you’ve booked it all yourself. Perhaps the hardest perk to get is a flight upgrade – if you’re travelling to a very popular honeymoon destination like the Maldives then chances are your status won’t really mark you out enough as worthy of an upgrade – but it’s always worth mentioning that you’re on your honeymoon, either when you book your flights or as you check in, just in case.
